Back Pain Relief in Fort Collins

Treat the cause, not just the symptoms

Do you feel like you’ve tried everything to fix your back pain but nothing delivers lasting relief? Maybe you’ve even been told surgery is your only option. If so, you’re not alone. At Muscle Restoration Therapy, we hear this story often — and we’ve found that many other therapies treat the symptoms of pain, not what’s actually causing it. We take a different approach: we find and treat the true cause of your pain to deliver relief that lasts.

What Back Pain Can Look Like

You don’t need a diagnosis to start — we take it from there with a thorough assessment and treatment in your first visit.

Common Back Pain Cases We Treat:

  • Low back pain that’s worse after sitting, driving, or standing for long periods
  • Pain that radiates into the hip, glute, or down the leg (often described as sciatica-type pain)
  • Back pain linked to a disc issue that hasn’t fully resolved with rest
  • Stiffness or aching that’s become “background noise” you’ve learned to live with
  • Pain that flares with specific activity — lifting, bending, exercise, or sport

Fit one of these, or none of them? Either way, that’s exactly why we have a guarantee — we make sure we can help before you commit to anything.

Why back pain happens (and why masking it doesn't fix it)

Most back pain comes from more than one issue stacking up:

  • A muscle that’s stopped firing correctly
  • A compensation habit that formed after an old injury
  • Joint stress that’s built up gradually

These put stress on parts of your back that weren’t built to carry it. Painkillers and rest quiet the symptom — but if the pattern doesn’t change, the pain comes back.

We start with functional muscle testing to find which muscles are “switched off” or compensating, and build your plan around what we find — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Mark Rise evaluating back pain at Muscle Restoration Therapy, Fort Collins.

Mark Rise, our founder and owner, leads all of our initial back pain consultations. With over 25 years of experience, he’s seen countless different situations for clients with back pain — the pain often shows up in the same spot, but the cause has varied widely from client to client, and required different treatment plans. Mark’s years of experience treating back pain are what let him build the right plan for each individual client.

How we treat back pain at MRT

Once we know what’s actually causing your pain, your plan may combine:

  • Muscle Restoration Therapy (MRT) — targeted manual therapy that addresses the specific muscle imbalances found during your evaluation.
  • SoftWave therapy — non-invasive acoustic wave treatment that can help reduce inflammation and support the body’s own healing response.
  • Class IV laser therapy — used alongside SoftWave or on its own, depending on your situation.
  • Spinal decompression — for back pain connected to disc issues, sciatica, or spinal stenosis specifically.
  • PEMF therapy — pulsed electromagnetic therapy that stimulates tissue at a cellular level to further support correcting the muscular imbalances addressed through MRT.

Not every back pain case uses every tool above — your plan is built around what your evaluation actually shows, not a fixed package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes back pain?

Back pain usually comes from a combination of factors — muscle imbalance, joint stress, old injuries, movement habits, and sometimes disc-related issues. A root-cause evaluation is the fastest way to know which of these is driving your specific pain.

It depends on how long the pain has been building and what’s causing it. Most clients notice a difference after their first visit — that’s the basis of the MRT Guarantee — with a fuller, client-specific treatment plan typically unfolding over several visits. Every back pain situation is different, and we’ll walk through a transparent plan recommendation during your initial visit.

MRT is a cash-based clinic. We accept HSA/FSA cards, but we encourage you to check with your provider first to confirm coverage. We’re also happy to provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance directly, as some providers reimburse — we don’t communicate with insurance providers directly. Ask our front desk for details.

If back pain has lasted more than a couple of weeks, keeps coming back, or is limiting what you can do day to day, it’s worth getting evaluated rather than waiting it out.

No referral needed — you can book a consultation directly.

Back pain doesn't have to be something you just manage.
